The History of ABI

The Foundations: Ace and Belmont

The story of ABI is deeply intertwined with the rich caravan manufacturing heritage of East Yorkshire. The company was officially formed in 1972 through a strategic merger of two highly successful independent builders: Ace Caravans, which had been founded in Hull in 1962, and Belmont Caravans. The newly formed entity, Ace Belmont International (quickly abbreviated to ABI), set up its headquarters and manufacturing base in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

The Touring Boom and Expansion (1970s–1980s)

Throughout the 1970s, the UK touring caravan market experienced a massive boom, and ABI was perfectly positioned to capitalise on it. The company grew at an astonishing rate, acquiring Elddis Caravans in 1973 to further expand its footprint. During this era, ABI produced some of the most iconic touring models on British and European roads, most notably the Monza and the Award ranges, which became synonymous with accessible family holidays.

Navigating Challenges (1990s)

By the 1990s, ABI had grown into one of Europe's largest manufacturers of both touring and static caravans. However, economic fluctuations and intense competition brought significant financial challenges late in the decade. Following a period of receivership in 1998, the company underwent a major restructuring and a management buyout, emerging leaner and rebranded as ABI UK. Despite the turbulence, their commitment to design innovation never wavered.

The 2001 Strategic Pivot: A Dedicated Focus

The defining moment in ABI's modern history occurred in 2001. In a bold and unprecedented move, the company announced it was completely ceasing the production of all touring caravans and motorhomes. The historic "Ace" brand name was subsequently acquired by their local rivals, the Swift Group. From that moment onward, ABI channelled 100 percent of its resources, design expertise, and manufacturing prowess exclusively into the static holiday home and luxury lodge market.

Modern Era: Luxury and Residential Standards

This hyper-focus paid off spectacularly. Unburdened by the touring sector, ABI perfected the craft of static living. They became renowned for their hand-built quality, spacious open-plan layouts, and the introduction of contemporary, domestic-style interior design. Embracing the stringent BS 3632 residential standards, modern ABI models like the Ambleside, Beaumont, and Harrogate are celebrated for bringing true luxury, advanced thermal efficiency, and high-end comfort to residential and leisure parks across the UK.
